Windsor Symphony Performs Works of Jazz Pianist and Composer Oscar Peterson

“The Windsor Symphony Orchestra delivered a weekend of Canadian jazz great Oscar Peterson’s work, with pianist Thompson Egbo-Egbo centre stage,” writes Julie Kotsis in Monday’s (2/13) Windsor Star (Canada). “The WSO partnered with the Windsor International Film Festival to begin the weekend with a screening of the documentary film Oscar Peterson: Black + White. The film was followed Saturday evening by a concert highlighting Peterson’s Canadiana Suite, which was originally written as a ballet. Florence Price’s Symphony No. 1, her first full-scale orchestral composition and the first symphony by a Black woman to be performed by a major American orchestra, was also performed. A matinee concert of the Celebration of Oscar Peterson was also held Sunday afternoon. ‘We continue to highlight black voices at the WSO with a celebration of Oscar Peterson and Florence Price,’ said maestro Robert Franz. ‘Thank you to WIFF for bringing this film to Windsor and the support we received from Oscar Peterson’s widow Kelly Peterson, and composer/producer Lance Anderson on performing Oscar’s music.’ ”
